Building History
North of San Fransisco, up the rugged California coast is the scenic town of Arcata. And there, overlooking the town plaza is Jacoby's Storehouse. Built in 1857, the original jacoby Building, 104' by 34', was a unique structure to Humboldt County. As the gold rush of '49 swept California and communities mushroomed overnight, towns were quickly built of wood and in many cases, just as quickly destroyed by fire. Augustus Jacoby, however, a prominent local merchant, had more foresight than most when he began construction on his stone storehouse.
Seeing the need for a "fireproof storehouse" from which to supply the mule pack trains heading to the gold mines along the Klamath & Trinity Rivers, Jacoby built his building from local brick and stone with the roof composed of clay and concrete. When completed, the structure was a source of pride to the citizens of Arcata. It was the only fireproof building in Humboldt County and a focal point of community activity. Although Augustus Jacoby left Arcata in 1862, mercantile firms continued to occupy the "fireproof stone warehouse" and to supply the Arcata community and the mines of the interior. In 1880, the building was purchased by Alexander Brizard, a leading local merchant and pack train operator. Brizard knew the ravages of fire first hand, having lost almost everyting to a blaze that swept the Plaza (business district) in 1875.
Alexander Brizard remodeled the original Jacoby Building in 1898. In 1907, second and third stories were added and the building lengthened from 104' to 185' and widened from 34' to 50', to accomodate A. Brizard, one of the largest and oldest general merchandise firms on the northcoast. On the occasion of the centennial of A. Brizard merchantile operation, in 1963, the original building was designated California State Historic Landmark #783, which calls attention to the two foot thick original stone wall of the building. A decade later (1974) heirs of Alexander Brizard discontinued the mercantile business and in 1977 renovated, as Jacoby's Storehouse, the impressive building of today. Jacoby's Storehouse is a unique blend of delightful shops, restaurants and offices. The work of talented local craftsmen is seen in every detail of the interior. The handcrafted oak and stained glass are treasures to behold.
Your visit to the northcoast would not be complete without a visit to Jacoby's Storehouse. Anytime of year, the beauty of a bygone time awaits you. Come see the magic that is Jacoby's Storehouse.
